Termites

There are over 2,000 species of termites worldwide, each with its own unique characteristics, yet they share many similarities in appearance. Most termites measure between 0.2 and 1.5 cm in length and have soft bodies with straight antennae. The queen and king termites are larger, growing to more than 2 cm. Their color typically ranges from white to light brown, with worker termites being the lightest in shade. Flying termites, also known as alates, possess two pairs of equal-sized wings.

How Do Termites Get Into Your Home?

Termites usually enter homes from colonies established in soil near the foundation. They can invade through cracks, gaps, or openings around pipes and electrical lines, using these small spaces to gain access indoors. Termite infestations can also start due to:

  • Wooden structures such as decks, porches, or fences that are in direct contact with the ground

  • Firewood stacks placed too close to exterior walls

  • Damp soil near foundations caused by leaking pipes, gutters, or downspouts

  • Trees or shrubs planted too close to the building

By maintaining good home hygiene and addressing these risk factors, you can significantly reduce the chance of termite invasion.

What Are the Dangers of Termites?

Termites are often known as “silent destroyers” because they can infest and damage your property without any visible signs at first. They feed on cellulose, a material found in wood, paper, and many construction materials.
Unfortunately, every home, regardless of its structure or design, contains materials that attract termites. Over time, an untreated infestation can lead to severe structural damage, costing homeowners significant repairs.

Interesting facts

  • Termites are eusocial insects, meaning they live in organized colonies divided into castes, each with specific roles such as workers, soldiers, and reproductives.

  • Termites are remarkably hygienic — they spend a lot of time grooming each other to prevent diseases from spreading within the colony.

  • Termites communicate through vibrations. When danger is detected, soldier termites bang their heads against the tunnel walls to alert the colony.

  • They have specialized sense organs located on their antennae and legs that allow them to detect vibrations. Some species can even choose which wood to infest by sensing the acoustic signals emitted by different materials.

There are 4,500 species of cockroaches in the world, and about 45 of them inhabit our region.
Cockroaches may not use their respiratory organs for 45 minutes.
One female can produce 250-350 cockroach cubs.
